Wi-Fi: Are you worried about possible health risks?

Earlier this month, school administrators in Ontario’s Simcoe County decided not to turn off wireless internet in classrooms despite complaints from parents who suspect their children are being made ill by the Wi-Fi.

There’s a debate in the scientific community about whether radiation from wireless communications could pose health risks. Some studies suggest Wi-Fi may cause neurological and cardiac symptoms, but other researchers insist the concerns are unfounded.

Dan Krewski, director of the McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment at the University of Ottawa, told CBC Radio’s Metro Morning that so far, the medical evidence is reassuring. There have been thousands of research papers on the potential health effects of the type of radiation emitted by Wi-Fi and cellphones, he said, and overall, they show no cause for concern.

A day earlier, British physicist Barrie Trower had shared an opposite view with Metro Morning. Trower, who advised the British Secret Service on the use of microwave weapons during the Cold War, thinks parents are right to worry.

Mobile Phone Tumor Fears

Grateful to Paul Doyon for submitting this via emfrefugee.

April 17, 2010 by: admin

David Smith faithfully sold mobile phones for 10 years. Little did he know, he was getting paid to sell something that he believes has now ruined his life. “I think it would be very foolish, very foolish, to assume there is no relationship and not take any precautions,” David said.

“What makes me angry is that they continue to sell these phones without making sure that they are safe.” The evidence is mounting. Brain tumors are on the increase – even neurosurgeons are concerned. The industry stands firm, however, not all of them. David was just 30 years old when he underwent three operations to remove the tumor as big as a golf ball, around his acoustic nerve.

During the surgery, the nerve was removed and another was accidentally damaged, causing David to lose muscular control in his face. “I believe mobile phones gave me this tumor and I blame the mobile phone companies,” David said.”I was angry at the mobile phone companies and at the telecommunication companies because they’ve put this product on the market without the proper research to what it does, I guess they’ve used us as guinea pigs.” The tumor was situated just behind his right ear.

“I used to use my right ear as my phone ear, but I don’t do that anymore because I can’t hear out of it,” David said. “I used to use the mobile phone maybe one or two hours a day for the 10 years or so before I was diagnosed.”

David’s tumor is one that studies have linked to mobile phone use. Professor Bruce Armstrong is head of Sydney University’s Public Health Dept. He’s spent 10 years looking at the research between mobile phones and brain tumors.

There was evidence of a twofold increase in risk of tumors. While David is trying to piece his life back together, he worries for the millions who constantly use their mobile. “You see 10 year olds running around the street using mobile phones, I wonder how they’ll affect the development of their brains,” said David.

Enrico Grani too blames his brain tumor on heavy mobile phone use over 10 years. “I had an analogue phone it was like a toy, you know what I mean, you get a new toy you talk on the phone,” said Enrico. He was diagnosed with a meninglioma in the right parietal globe.

After the operation, he was in a coma for three days and suffered a stroke. “I blame the cell phone industry blinded by greed, they’ve known about this for many, many years but they still deny it,” said Enrico.

None of this surprises those in the business of brain surgery.

One prominent Canberra Neurologist has written a research paper on the link between mobile phones and brain tumors. He believes mobile phones will be the next great public health issue and he compares their effects with those of smoking and asbestos.

He’s calling on government and industry to take immediate steps to reduce exposure of consumers to mobile phones. As a Neurosurgeon Richard Bit-tar has seen a rise in brain tumors in the last 15 years, but says its hard to point the finger solely at mobile phone use. Yet Richard tries to use his mobile phone only on loudspeaker or uses a nearby land line when possible.

“There is certainly an element of concern not only from myself but from a lot of my colleagues. A lot of my neurosurgery colleagues go even further and really try and minimize the amount of mobile phone use they engage in, that reflects an underlying concern that there may well be a relationship,” said Richard.

His warning to consumers? “Minimize the amount of time you spend with your mobile phone up against your ear. “We asked the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association’s Chris Althaus if he was worried about getting a tumor: “No.”

Does he use his phone every day? “I use it every day and I use it a lot every day, I’m very comfortable personally with the way the research effort conveys to markets like Australia and globally the level of safety you can enjoy when using a mobile phone,” said Chris. But David had a different view.

“It’s ruined the life I had previously had, all these plans and ideas and so much hope for the future and now that’s all changed. I’ve had to reevaluate everything,” said David.

Everything You Need to Know About Mobile Usage & Your Health

Grateful to Emily Johnston for bringing this to our attention.  Excellent facts worth your time and deliberation.

e-Health News Blog

If you have read the book, Exposed, you might understand the difference between the U.S. and the European Union (EU) when it comes to health measures. The EU uses the precautionary principle that states that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus that the action or policy is not harmful, the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those who advocate taking the action. In the U.S., the burden of proof to date falls in the hands of the manufacturers’ witnesses when it comes to cell phone use.

In one case [PDF] of cell phone use as a cancer-causing agent, a U.S. judge ruled against plaintiffs and accepted a motion to exclude the testimony of the plaintiffs’ experts, while denying a motion to exclude the testimony of the defendants’ experts. In this atmosphere, if you believe that cell phones have a harmful effect on your health, then it is up to you to take up the precautionary principle and take appropriate action to protect your own health.

Calculated specific absorbed radiation (SAR) distribution in an anatomical model of head next to a 125 mW dipole antenna.Radiation Absorption: The rate at which radiation is absorbed by the human body is measured by the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) as regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

  • The FCC requires cell phone manufacturers to ensure that their phones comply with these objective limits for safe exposure. Any cell phone at or below these SAR levels (that is, any phone legally sold in the U.S.) is a “safe” phone as measured by these standards. The FCC has set a SAR limit of 1.6 W/kg, averaged over a volume of 1 gram of tissue, for the head. The FCC ID number usually is shown somewhere on the case of the phone. Use that number and the FCC ID Search Form to learn more about your cell phone’s SAR limits.
  • But, physiological functions of human body are regulated by electric currents. Therefore, is not surprising that placing human body within electromagnetic field, of sufficient strength, may affect physiological processes. In one study, conducted in Finland, scientists learned that molecular level changes might take place in human volunteers in response to exposure to RF-EMF (radio frequency modulated electromagnetic fields). These same scientists also confirmed that proteomics screening approach can identify protein targets of RF-EMF in human volunteers. In mobile phone usage, the RF-EMF is measured by SAR.
  • Sufferers from Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) might keep the above study in mind when reading about EHS below.

FCC logoCancer: Thirteen countries have launched a project called INTERPHONE to investigate the risk of cancer for the mobile phone user beyond the studies that have been done to date. The idea behind this project is that cancer takes some time to develop, so only studies over ten years are of interest. Participating countries include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the UK.

  • If you are concerned that the U.S. is not involved with this cooperative study, never fear. The U.S. government has embarked on its own study through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which nominated cell phone RF-EMF emissions testing to the National Toxicology Program (NTP).
  • The NTP is in the initial stages of conducting toxicology and carcinogenicity studies in laboratory animals, using specially designed chambers to provide exposures that simulate those of cell phone users in the United States. The rats and mice will be exposed to radio frequency energy from the two technologies (CDMA and GSM) currently used in the U.S. at two frequencies (900 and 1900 MHz).

Cell UsageNonthermal and Thermal Effects: The radiation that is absorbed by the human head is effected by dielectric heating. Most of the heating effects will occur at the surface of the head, causing the temperature to increase by a fraction of a degree. This also is known as the “microwave effect,” since this is the same principle that is used in microwave ovens. Overt RF energy can damage eyes (cataracts), create skin burns and heat stroke.

  • Non-thermal effects are caused by reactions to RF energy other than the temperature of the emitting body. Examples include synchrotron radiation, maser radiation, and artificially generated radio and TV signals. The effects of non-thermal RF remain under study (and under debate).
  • Meanwhile, the Institute of Science in Society (ISS), which is an international center of excellence in Science and Technology Studies located at the University of Nottingham, UK, published a four-part report on the effects of electromagnetic radiation. Under the chapter for Non-Thermal Effects, the report states that “The ’safe’ exposure limits recommended by the international authority, International Committee for Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP) take no account of non-thermal effects, despite the mounting evidence of health hazards from such effects.”

Cell TowerElectromagnetic Hypersensitivity: Also known as EHS, some mobile phone users have reported feeling unspecific symptoms such as burning and tingling sensations in the skin of the head and extremities, fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, loss of mental attention, reaction times and memory retentiveness, headaches, malaise, tachycardia (heart palpitations) and/or disturbances of the digestive system during and after mobile phone use or when using household appliances, visual display units (VDUs) and certain light sources.

  • The fields that electromagnetically hypersensitive individuals consider to be the cause of their symptoms vary considerably. According to one report, EHS carries symptoms that are similar to symptoms created by other causes, including psychological factors. But, the report also states that — whatever the cause — EHS is real and sometimes disabling for the affected individual. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that, apart from treatment by professionals, self help groups can be a valuable resource for the EHS individual.
  • In the report issued by the ISS (see previous topic), scientists report mobile phone radiation has been found to affect a wide variety of brain functions — such as electrical activity (EEG) electrochemistry and the permeability of the blood/brain barrier — and to undermine the immune system. Additionally, mobile phone users show statistically significant increase (by a factor of between 2 and 3) in the incidence of a rather rare kind of tumor (epithelial neuroma) on the side of the brain nearest the mobile phone.

Texting while drivingAccident Hazards: It has been proven that texting and talking on mobile phones causes automobile accidents, and measure have been taken in many U.S. states to prohibit the use of mobile phones while driving. Drivers that use cell phones are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves, and driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.

What You Can Do: If you believe that studies are undermined by mobile phone lobbyists and that effects are under-reported for any number of reasons, don’t feel alone. According to this recent article in GQ, the public is subject to a grand world experiment without informed consent through the use of RF-EMF. But, before you object to using cell phones and become an advocate for abolishing cell towers, you might want to remove the wireless connectivity from your home computer.

According to Blake Levitt, author of Electromagnetic Fields: A Consumer’s Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves, installing a Wi-Fi system in your home is similar to “inviting a cell tower indoors.”

“Is your mobile phone killing you”

Seek protection to mitigate hazards http://BioMapped.com

… the following provided by Angela Flynn

Please, find enclosed part II of Phil Dobbie’s radio program “Twisted Wire”, “Is your mobile phone killing you”:

“On last week’s program we asked whether exposure to your mobile phone is increasing your risk of contracting cancer or having a brain tumour. The jury is out on that question, with the scientific community divided and no conclusive proof either way.

Yet no proof has been translated as “no risk” in many quarters.
The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) admitted its terminology was misleading and corrected the wording on its website after last week’s program.

AMTA has re-worded its website from saying there was “no public health risk” to now say “there is no established evidence of health effects”.

This week we hear again from Lloyd Morgan, the retired electronics engineer, who has questioned the methods used by the multinational Interphone study, including selection bias, insufficient latency time, and the exclusion of children and young adults. In fact, some people were excluded from the study because they had a brain tumour and were too ill to be interviewed!

In Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, he points to Interphone research that shows that using a mobile phone actually protects you from a brain tumour.

Does that sound like a credible finding?

We also hear more from Olle Johansson, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. You’ll recall that in last week’s program he said that cancer and brain tumour might be the least of our worries. There could be other effects that are far more detrimental. The way he argues the case you have to seriously wonder whether he has a point.

Have a listen and tell us what you think. Are we blindly leading ourselves into the unknown?”

Cell Phone Antennas Blamed for Kindergarten Cancer Cases

Perhaps some people reading this — especially those with credentials after your names — would like to post their comments on the Bayville Blog:

Cell Phone Antennas Blamed for Kindergarten Cancer Cases

BAYVILLE, N.Y. (WPIX) – A lawsuit is set to be filed Monday alleging that the cancer afflicting students and teachers of a Bayville school is caused by the dozens of cell phone antennas attached to a nearby water tower.

Three young students of Bayville Primary School have already died of leukemia and many more are sick.

“We believe as much as 30 percent of the teachers, administrative staff and employees have been diagnosed with some type of illness, cancer, leukemia and things of that nature,” said Attorney Andrew Campanelli.

A brief email to WPIX from the school district denies Campanelli’s statement.

However, the cell phone antennas are a painful reminder for Beverly Pacifico, whose son Mitchell, a student at Bayville, recently won a painful two-year battle with leukemia.

“My son went through 102 weeks of chemotherapy,” Pacifico said. His leukemia has been in remission for the past two years.

Bayville is a public school, and those parents in the district without the financial means to enroll their child in a private school face a terrible decision.

Madeleine Parrin, whose requests to transfer her children to neighboring public schools were denied, said, “It kills me every day when I drop them off or send them on the bus to go to that school.”

The lawsuit seeks to have the antennas removed, citing a village law that states that public property near a school or within a mile of residences cannot be used for profit. The cell phone antennas bring $200 thousand annually to the village coffers.

So far, the mayor of Bayville has not returned phone calls from WPIX.
