diagnostic criteria for electrohypersensitivity (EHS) 2009

ARTAC (the Association for Research and Treatments against Cancer) has established diagnostic criteria for EHS. 2009

For several months, the Association for Research and Treatments Against Cancer, ARTAC has been conducting research into the health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs).   A number of studies have already shown a link between EMFs and certain cancers:

  • an increased risk of childhood cancer when the home is situated less than 600m from an overhead power line (275,000 to 400,000 volts).
  • an increased risk of brain tumours after prolonged mobile phone use (1 hour per day for 10 years).
  • breast cancer and other adult cancers (leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, melanoma).

These associative links are difficult to establish due to the extended period of exposure time needed for a cancer to appear. It is thought that the carcinogenic mechanisms of EMFs could involve perturbing cellular division, possibly due to an increased production of free radicals.

As far as the nervous system is concerned, the health effects and action mechanisms of EMFs are better established (see the Bioinitiative Report). In accordance with the precautionary principle, ARTAC considers that public authorities urgently need to take measures to regulate the use of wireless technologies – principally mobile phone masts, WiFi and mobile phones.

Many people now claim to be “electrohypersensitive” and feel unwell when in the presence of EMFs (headaches, memory problems, insomnia, fatigue, etc). In Sweden, a country which first developed wireless technologies in the early 1980s, electrohypersensitivity is recognised as a “handicap” which affects to a greater or lesser degree 250,000 people out of a population of 9 million.

For almost a year Professor Belpomme has undertaken examinations of several dozen patients who claim to be electrohypersensitive. These people are real patients and have enabled ARTAC to carry out scientific research in this field. First, ARTAC produced a clinical description of what Professor Belpomme calls the EMF intolerance syndrome. Two phases have been identified :

  • an initial phase characterized by headaches and neurological problems, heart rhythm disturbances and difficulties concentrating.
  • a secondary phase characterized by a trio of chronic symptoms – insomnia, fatigue, depression.

These symptoms can be accompanied by memory and behavioural problems – irritability, aggression, and even suicidal tendencies.

In terms of diagnosis, the EMF intolerance syndrome can be recognised on the basis of several criteria:

  • the absence of any other recognised pathology which could explain the symptoms;
  • an abnormal pulsed echodoppler examination of the brain showing a clear decrease in the pulsatility of several areas of the brain;
  • an increase in the blood of stress proteins and other biomarkers reflecting cerebral suffering.

In addition, about 50% of patients have shown a decrease in the levels of urinary melatonin (a sleep hormone), which could be a cause or a consequence of their insomnia.

ARTAC’s Research on EMF intolerance syndrome

ARTAC’s research programme has led to the establishment of an international working group and a specific research team. Objective diagnostic tests have been carried out, notably a pulsed echodoppler examination of the brain which shows characteristic effects on the brain. The echodoppler and the biological markers prove the clinical reality of this syndrome, but do not yet allow the ARTAC research team to connect it to EMFs.

A second phase of research is presently underway using provocation tests aimed at proving objectively a causal link between symptoms of the EMF intolerance syndrome and EMFs. These tests consist in carrying out dosages of markers and electroencephalogrammes, first in an environment clear of EMFs and then after exposure to EMF-emitting equipment.

ARTAC’s Research on Electrosensitivity

Electrosensitivity must be clearly distinguished from the EMF intolerance syndrome. Research on electrosensitivity is needed to determine why some patients are affected by the EMF intolerance syndrome while others are not.

Our brains contain millions of tiny magnets known as magnetosomes, which could account for the causal link between symptoms and EMFs in electrohypersensitive patients. ARTAC is trying to find out whether there are individual differences in the number of magnetosomes and has organised a cohort study to identify patients and to study the evolution of this syndrome.

Professor Belpomme consulted by the AFSSET

In 2005 the AFSSET (French Agency for Sanitary Security in the Environment and Workplace) published a report on mobile phones that claims EMFs do not have harmful effects. The AFSSET will publish another report in the next few months and consulted Professor Belpomme on the matter on 28 January 2009.

The cancer specialist spoke for three hours on the potential dangers of WiFi and mobile phone masts and on the need to establish a firm diagnosis for people suffering from EMF intolerance These patients need to be given close medical supervision as they may be at an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and possibly of cancer. Professor Belpommme also explained the cerebral symptoms caused by electromagnetic fields. These symptoms might be due to the adverse biological effects induced by the cerebral system in response to EMFs.

It is hoped that the new report by the AFSSET will be based on objective and impartial scientific considerations and will therefore lead to a revision of the conclusions of its previous report in 2005, in which the risks of EMFs were minimised.

Residents of the View Park/Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles won an important victory at the Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission on February 18 (see article from LA Daily News below). While T-Mobile can still appeal to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors the 3-2 vote to deny a permit for a wireless facility proposed for the rooftop garage on a building hosting a CVS pharmacy, the victory is particularly significant because it marks the debut of a regional Southern California coalition, Residents Engaged Against Cell Towers (REACT), who successfully mobilized for the Feb. 18 hearing.microwave-tower-golden-sky

Organizations involved in this regional coalition include residents from Los Angeles, San Diego, Glendale, Pasadena, Tarzana, Burbank, Mar Vista, Altadena, Baldwin Hills Estates, Sherman Oaks, Ladera Heights, Scripps Ranch, Hacienda Heights, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Mission Viejo, Irvine, Rancho Santa Fe, and Escondido.

Along with the Coalition to Regulate Antennae Siting ( http://www.safeantenna.org ) in New York City, Southern California is one of the current hotbeds of activity on this issue working to take the fight to the national level.

This story may make you consider giving up milk altogether. The story mentions ‘using clean electrical energy from the grid’, well good luck with that far fetched idea! There would also be a big question mark about the cleanliness of the energy as it leaves the site, and a very good chance that dangerous high frequency pollution will be caused around the farm. We know that microwaving food damages the quality and goodness, what will it do to the milk?

Wi-Fi in School

I had a conversation with the parent representative to the French school board (CSF) today – a fellow parent at my children’s school – she told me that the CSF was going to ask Health Canada and the BC Worker’s Compensation Board to do some of it’s own research on EMR from Wi -Fi. We had an exchange – she said that it was not the CSF’s job to set safety limits. Below is my response to an email she sent out earlier this evening. By the way, she is a doctor.

Subject: Re: Parents Ordi-Santé et Principe de Précaution.
XXXXXXXXX, I do appreciate your proactive activity around this. With respect to your comment this afternoon, you are absolutely correct that it is not CSF’s job to establish safety limits, but it should be its first priority to ensure the safety of all of the children in its care. And ANY doubt should be decided for the benefit of the students. Health Canada has NEVER effectively responded to an emerging health threat – tobacco? Asbestos?.

If you watched the BBC Panorama show (Wi -Fi: A Warning Signal), you would have heard Sir William Stewart, U.K.’s top scientist saying the the WHO (OSM) is wrong – that the whole basis of their safety limits are inadequate to protect the population, especially our children. Same for the German government who has warned all citizens not to use Wi -Fi. Is that not telling? Or Gerd Oberfeld and Henry Lai, who are world reknowned for their research into electromagnetic radiation and biological effects – they both said they would pull their children out of any school that had Wi-Fi. And Olle Johansson of the Karolinska institute in Sweden has found biological effects at radiation levels lower than Wi -Fi. If you have not watched it, here is the link to the show:

In 2002, Lloyds of London and the entire insurance industry excluded health effects from electromagnetic radiation from all liability policies for the wireless industry. This was in response to the work that Dr. George Carlo did with the Wireless Telecommunications Research program from 1993 to 1999 (300 scientists, 28.5 million dollars). Interestingly, the insurance industry has known about and responded to emerging health threats in exactly this manner. They did exactly the same thing for the tobacco industry while tobacco execs continued to say there were no health effects from smoking.

We do not need any more short term epidemiological studies. A two or three year study will not answer the question of what may or will happen after ten or fifteen years – the time it takes for cancerous tumours to present. We now know with certainty, that radiation from Wi-Fi, cellular and cordless home phones cause leakage in the blood brain barrier, breakage of DNA, interruption of intra-cellular communication, and changes in cognitive function (the Stewart Report, 2000).

This is not a “maybe, we need more data” situation. If you don’t believe me, please look at the truly “independent” double blind, peer reviewed research (in other words, not funded by the wireless industry).

We MUST apply the precautionary principle because there is so much evidence (not doubt, evidence). In my opinion, anything less is absolutely reckless.

Cancer Causes Control. 2009 Feb 18. [Epub ahead of print]
Maternal occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields and the risk of brain cancer in the offspring. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19224378 Li P, McLaughlin J, Infante-Rivard C. Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, 1110 Pine Avenue West, Montreal, QC, H3A 1A3, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the contribution of maternal occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) shortly before and during
pregnancy on the incidence of childhood brain tumors.

METHODS: A total of 548 incident cases and 760 healthy controls recruited between 1980 and 2002 from two Canadian provinces (Quebec and Ontario) were
included in this study, and their mothers were interviewed. Quantitative occupational ELF-MF exposure in microTesla units was estimated using individual exposure estimations or a job exposure matrix. We used three metrics to analyze exposure: cumulative, average, and maximum level attained.

RESULTS: Using the average exposure metric measured before conception, an increased risk was observed for astroglial tumors (OR = 1.5, 95% CI = 1.0-2.4).

During the entire pregnancy period, a significantly increased risk was observed for astroglial tumors as well as for all childhood brain tumors with the average metric
(OR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.1-2.5 and OR = 1.5, 95% CI = 1.1-2.2, respectively). Based on job titles, a twofold risk increase was observed for astroglial tumors (OR = 2.3, 95% CI = 0.8-6.3) and for all childhood brain tumors (OR = 2.3, 95% CI = 1.0-5.4) among sewing machine operators.

CONCLUSIONS: Results are suggestive of a possible association between
maternal occupational ELF-MF exposure and certain brain tumors in their offspring. PMID: 19224378

Large scale recall of mobile phones

The large-scale recall of mobile phones of the latest generation (put on the market in September 2008) which is currently under way in Europe is a very serious matter, since it was an official state organisation that ascertained that they did not conform to the SAR statutory limits.

We don’t know if this is a world first, or if the recall has been done at the request of the certification authorities, or, more seriously, if there have been any pathologies (tumours) or deaths. However there is little doubt that it will have a very significant impact, especially since the manufacturer hoped to carry out the operation with the greatest possible discretion!

The important thing is that we have all the relevant items, in particular the signed declaration of conformity certifying that the phone meets the required standards, which is not true and could therefore have grave consequences for the manufacturer.  The dossier is being prepared for distribution.

Warmest greetings to everyone from France, Marie-Pierre

President Obama panel exploring cell tower radiation risks, sign petition

Presidential Cancer Panel Exploring Cell Tower Radiation Risks

29.01.2009 by admin Category Electromagnetic Health Blog

Source: birminghammail.net
Jan 29 2009 by Neil Elkes, Birmingham Mail

January 29, 2009; US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has turned to a Midland anti-mobile phone mast campaigner to help the fight against cancer.

Eileen O’Connor, as a founder member of the Radiation Research Trust, has led the battle against the relentless growth of mobile phone masts and technology for the past seven years.

And now the US President’s cancer panel, set up by Obama to research the possible links with both nuclear and electro-magnetic radiation, has asked Eileen for her views on the issue.

The trust has supported widespread research into the possible dangers of mobile and wireless radiation and campaigns for the technology to be made safer.

Eileen said: “Obama’s panel has launched an information gathering exercise and I was invited to provide evidence”. While I am not building up my hopes, I am delighted the issue is being taken seriously by the President.

“President Obama recently said science is about ensuring that facts and evidence are never twisted or obscured by politics or ideology.” “It’s about listening to what our scientists have to say; even when it’s inconvenient and I welcome this approach.”

The evidence gathered by the panel will be considered in drawing up advice to the new President on measures needed to be taken to improve the health of Americans.

Any steps taken are likely to be considered around the world.

Eileen first suspected a link between mobile phone masts and cancer when the arrival of a mast in her home village of Wishaw, near Sutton Coldfield coincided with a cluster of cancer cases, including her own.

The campaign hit the headlines in 2003 when the mast was pulled down in the middle of the night and residents blockaded the site to stop it being replaced.

The Radiation Research Trust funds and draws together scientific research from around the world and lobbies government to adopt a more cautious approach to mobile technology.

A key theory is that it is the electromagnetic radiation frequency, and not intensity or power of the signal, which can cause the damage. It is also thought that some people are more sensitive to the effects than others.

Comment from Camilla Rees, Founder of ElectromagneticHealth.org:

What Obama’s advisors will learn is that people are being made sick by the radiation being emitted from cell towers, health care costs are being driven by related illnesses, peoples lives are unfairly crumbling because of the lack of responsibility exhibited by industry and governments in designing these technologies and the serious biological and DNA-level effects of microwave radiation have been known about for decades. He will also learn that, under pressure from the telecom lobby, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 included language taking away state and local government’s rights to limit towers on health or environmental grounds. This power grab is a travesty that needs to be reversed to protect the health of humans, animals, and nature.

If Obama is the courageous, intelligent, truth telling man we want to believe, informed by his team of the health hazards of microwave radiation, he will need to immediately stop the proliferation of the Wi-Max network underway in this country and press industry to find safer means of telecommunications. He should pressure Congress to mandate the FCC lower EMF emissions guidelines for industry, repeal Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and establish cell-phone and wireless-free neighborhoods, government buildings, public spaces and schools.

These are the mandates of ElectromagneticHealth.org’s Petition to Congress found at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/6/urge-congress-on-emf-safety-fcc-must-change-exposure-guidelines-for-microwave-radiation-exposure

For journalists wanting to learn more about the known biological effects see www.BioInitiative.org. There is no question there are biological effects, the uncertainties concern the various potential mechanisms of action.

Medical Director takes a stand … hazards of electromagnetic pollution

February 10, 2009

Dr. Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the world renowned Paracelsus Clinic in Lustmühle, Switzerland says he is convinced ‘electromagnetic loads’ lead to cancer, concentration problems, ADD, tinnitus, migraines, insomnia, arrhythmia, Parkinson’s and even back pain.

At Paracelsus (www.paracelsus.ch), cancer patients are now routinely educated in electromagnetic field remediation strategies and inspectors from the Geopathological Institute of Switzerland are sent to patients’ homes to assess electromagnetic field exposures.

Of note, Dr. Rau says a strategy to consider for those experiencing ‘electrical sensitivity’ symptoms is to remove the electromagnetic ‘hot spot’ in the head created by the presence of metal fillings. Concern is thus not only for the ‘neurotoxic’ aspect of mercury in fillings, an increasingly understood hazard, but because fillings themselves act as antennas in the presence of electromagnetic fields from cell phones and cell towers, wi-fi networks, portable phones, and other sources of radiofrequency radiation.

Rau says the removal of dental fillings can be an important early step in reducing electrical sensitivity, allowing some people to live in homes they otherwise could not tolerate.

Cultures have shown beneficial bacteria grows more slowly in the presence of electromagnetic fields, says Rau, allowing pathological organisms to dominate. Thus, a strategy with electrically sensitive patients, or with those facing chronic conditions, is the aggressive supplementation with probiotics and other Biological Medicine approaches to balance intestinal flora. Many people with chronic infections likely linked to EMF exposures, such as Lyme Disease, are symptom- free after an aggressive microorganism rebalancing program.

Electrical sensitivity—originally known as radio wave sickness—is a sometimes debilitating experience created by these and other disregulating effects of electromagnetic fields. Linked to many acute and chronic illness conditions, electrical sensitivity is a serious emerging public health issue globally and a subject in which most doctors have no training.

A Petition to Congress, created by  www.ElectromagneticHealth.org is now circulating on the internet, requesting Congress

1) mandate the FCC lower exposure guidelines to reflect the large body of science showing biological effects at exposures much lower than current standards,

2) repeal Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which rescinded state and local governments right to resist towers on health or environmental grounds,

3) stop the roll out of the Wi-Max network until Congress better understands the potential health consequences, and

4) accommodate citizens unable to function adequately in high EMF environments, including forbidding cell towers on school properties.

Exposing children in schools to radiation, known to impair brain function and learning, Rau describes as “criminal”. He says, “It is unethical to expose children to electromagnetic load in this way. We know that power stations for electromagnetic waves like mobile phones are hurting the brains of children, so to put such stations into schools is really…very, very, very bad. Rau says, the question is, “Does the school, or does the society, really want to have intelligent, well-educated children, or not?”

He says, “If you install mobile phone towers, which radiate to the children, their intelligence, their brain capacity, decreases. You will have more ADD children, you will have less function of the brain, which in the long term reflects on the intelligence of the children, of the possibility to really teach children, and in the long term, the more this overcomes society, the more we will have dumb children.”

The reality of the health consequences of electromagnetic radiation eventually will have to be faced, and this will only happen with active pressure on Congress. It is estimated that 3-8% of populations in developed countries experience serious electrohypersensitivity symptoms today, and 35% experience mild symptoms. With increasing electromagnetic field exposures, these numbers, along with the suffering involved for people who are impacted, and the health care costs involved, are bound to go up.
